Description

English: A cremation burial from Amathus (300-250 B.C.). Limestone and alabaster.

An alabastron containing the ashes of a cremated individual and the remains of a gold plated laurel wreath was placed within a larger limestone vessel. The burial was then covered with earth to form a mound. This type of burial is not local to Cyprus and the ceramics found within, which were imported from Alexandria, also prove that this may have been the tomb of an official of the Ptolemaic administration of the island, who was buried according to the customs of his home country. Burials of this type originated in Macedonia and were spread throughout the Greek world during the rule of Alexander the Great successors.
