Summary
[edit]DescriptionArgos Hill Windmill - geograph.org.uk - 1319362.jpg |
English: Argos Hill Windmill. Nearly four years on from this, 40911, nothing seems to have changed. There has been a mill on this site since the 17th century and the current one was built between 1831-34 and continued in commercial operation until 1923. The mill is owned by Wealden District Council who have let it fall into a serious degree of disrepair resulting in a proposal in January 2008 that they demolish it as they did not wish to waste tax payers money repairing it. However, a mixture of groups formed a charitable trust to save it including some cash from the council though it was pointed out that Wealden had not even spent the money allocated within its budget for any repairs. A scheme to turn it into a turbine to generate electricity received lukewarm support in June 2008 and so the scaffolding remains and the future of this grade II* listed building remains unclear, the more nothing gets done the more likely the rotting structure is due to collapse. The mill itself provides a focal point for miles around being visible as far south as Heathfield. |
