[edit]DescriptionArenstorf Orbit.gif |
English: Arenstorf orbits - a special type of orbits appearing as a solution of three-body problem (bodies are interacting according to Newton's law of universal gravitation) when the mass of one of the bodies is much smaller than the other two masses. The figure shows the trajectory of an artificial satellite moving in gravity field of the Earth and Moon. Solving differential equations of motion with carefully chosen initial conditions, we can obtain unusual orbits for the sattelite - they are periodic and look like "8" with the Earth and Moon located inside each loop of the '8' or (for other initial conditions) - a kind of "pretzel", shown here. Orbits of this type have been used in real flights to the Moon within the American Apollo space program (in the famous "Apollo-13" movie with Tom Hanks the image of Arenstorf orbit shaped like "8" can be seen on the big screen in Mission Control Center).
