It should be noted here that the Can-adian (Niagara) Falls of Ontario havealready been shortened by over 400 feet,mostly due to the Canadian NiagaraPower Company. The effects of thisshortening has already impaired theappearance of the Falls, when viewedfrom a point looking up the river, so thatfrom a distance the diameter appearssmaller than the American Falls, althoughtwo and a half times the circumference.Certain people have been wont to com-pare Niagara with Victoria Falls on theZambesi in Africa, which reaches a mile The All-Canadian Falls Question. 133

NIAGARA FALLS FROM ARCH BRIDGE.The Canadian Falls lately extended to line A A, but now curtailed by power companies. in length. These African falls are brokenup by a very large number of smallislands at the very edge, while the Niag-ara Falls are obstructed only by the littleisland of Luna and the larger GoatIsland. But, including these, NiagaraFalls had a breadth of a mile along thecrest line before the curtailment of fourhundred and fifteen feet for one of thepresent power companies. With theimpending destruction of the Falls thetotal breadth will be reduced from overa mile to 1,600 feet in circumference, anda diameter of from 1,200 feet to 800 feetand what remains of the Falls will be allCanadian.
