The next popular excuse for thesurgeons knife was appendicitis, and thoughthere are doubtless many times when opera-tions have been necessary to save life, therecan be no question but what numbers ofprecious lives have been sacrificed on accountof this later fad or craze, though probably thelist is not as great as the unnecessary deathsresulting from ovariotomy. It is to be hopedthat the new treatment may prove as success-ful as its discoverer anticipates and that themania for operations in all real or supposedcases of appendicitis may have had its day.
