Often, a sym-bol appears in one age, and the spirit of which it is the ex->pression is revealed in another. Each answers the need ofits own time. From the creative standpoint, which is outof time, spirit and symbol are one; but to us, who see thingssuccessively, they seem as prior and posterior. If this be so, it should be possible for a thoughtful and be-lieving mind in some measure to forecast the future from therecord of the past. No doubt, past and present contain thegerms of all that is to be, were the analyst omniscient. Butit needs not omniscience roughly to body-forth the contoursof coming events. It is done daily, on a smaller or laigerscale, with more or less plausibility. All theories aregrounded in this principle. And it is noticeable that, atthis moment, such tentative prophesies are more than fre-quent, and more comprehensive than usuaArenaMagazine-Volume04
