English: A half length portrait of the Duc de Nivernois (1716-1798), French Ambassador to Britain. He stands in profile to the right, looking front, wearing a neat bagwig, lace cravat, black stock and sash. He came to England in 1763 to discuss peace at the end of a war in which thanks to the conduct of William Pitt the Elder, France had lost America, Louisburg and Fort Duquesne, and the French navy was almost entirely destroyed in the decisive battles of Lagos and Quiberon in 1759. Wolfe's crowning victory at Quebec (13 Sept. 1759) destroyed the last remnant of French dominion in Canada. Clive's victory of Plassy (23 Jan. 1757) rendered the English masters of Bengal, while in January 1760 Sir Eyre Coote routed the last French army in the East Indies at Wandewash. Nivernois was of small and slight build, and upon his arrival in England Charles Townshend is said to have remarked ‘that they had the preliminaries of a man to sign the preliminaries of peace’. Sadly, he lost his entire fortune during the Revolution, dying as a refugee in 1798.
