English: Plate 11: The Arch of the Portuguese: Rear Face; two-tiered structure with a portal surmounted with the coat-of arms of Portugal and framed by Corinthian columns flanked by narrow wings; the large painting on upper central tympanum depicts the victorious Ferdinand mounted on horseback followed by Victory; before him the personification of Antwerp kneels in welcome; along balustrade are armed children riding dolphins, flanked by the figures of Hope and Public Security ('Securitas Publica'); above two winged female personifications bear the coat-of-arms of Portugal and support an escutcheon at centre; the royal portraits in the lower niches flanking archway represent the Portuguese kings Alphonso I and John I; after Ludovicus Nonnius; unsigned; illustration for Gaspar Gevaerts' "Pompa Introitus" (Antwerp, 1641)

One of a series of forty-three plates illustrating Gaspar Gevaerts' "Pompa Introitus"; for further comments see 1884,0112.31. This etching depicts the second temporary decoration erected along the procession route for the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand's triumphal entry into Antwerp in 1635. It stood at the corner of the Arenbergstraat. The arch was the design of Ludovicus Nonnius, a doctor and antiquarian from a Portuguese family, and was raised by the Portuguese merchants of Antwerp. Unlike his role in the execution of the other arches and stages for the Pompa Introitus, Rubens here took no part in the design or execution of the Arch of the Portuguese; for the rear face of the arch see 1884,0112.42.
