Arctic sea ice, as captured by the AMSR-E instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite on Mar. 7, 2011, when the maximum extent of sea ice this year was recorded. The thickest, longest-lived ice in the Arctic has been declining at a rate of 15 percent per decade, according to NASA sea ice scientist Josefino Comiso in a paper published in August in the Journal of Climate. The sea ice decline is strongly correlated with the continued increase in average global surface temperature, and the Arctic is warming at three times the global rate, Comiso said.
