Le valli di Reggiolo e Novellara erano vasti territori occupati da paludi che progressivamente nei secoli sono stati bonificati . Questo processo è cominciato con la Tagliata nel 1200 , La Fiuma a metà del 1500 , la bonifica dell' Agro Mantovano Reggiano agli inizi del 1900 e l' ultima la bonifica delle acque basse reggiane agli inizi del 1920. Argini , canali e piccoli fossi, sono ancora oggi ambienti straordinari per una fauna e una flora che altrove sono diventate assai rare .
