examined early, only inflammatoryreactions and papillomas are found. But even as early as 1913 Fibiger hadfound 5 cases of cancer in rats fed onnematode-infected cockroaches and hehas found many since. He says ofthese early observations: In 5 laboratory rats fed on cockroaches(in 4 cases P. amcricana, in I case P. orien-*.alh) microscopical exammation of the car-diac portion of the stomach showed processeswhich differed from those in the other rats. The c/innges, in fad, /lerc appeared to betrue cancerous grorvths, ttie mucous membraneand submucosa tiaving cfiangcd into a tumorllsiuc of quite the same t^pe as is gencra//)ifouiul in true squamous-celted carcinoma in In two of these rats carcinomatous metas-tases were observed in a lymph gland and ina lung respectively; in a third case the urinarybladder contained papillomatous growth whichwas probably a metastasis too. Dr. Fibiger was led to make thesestudies by finding in 1907 in the stom-achs of three captive wild rats (A/usdecumanus) enormous papillomas asso-ciated with a nematode and showingcarcinomatous tendencies. These ratswhich belonged to the AnatomicalPathological Institute were probablyimported from Dorpat (Russia). Thisdiscovery led to the examination of.numerous Danish wild rats and ofblack and white rats from various lab-oratories
