English: A Merry, Black & white & Lightly-Coloured Christmas
On display this month in Archives NZ's foyer are a selection of Government-produced Christmas cards. These cards served two purposes. The first was to wish the public the compliments of the season, the second as a reminder of the year's achievements or services that were available. In the case of Premier 'King Dick' Seddon, they were not only a reminder to the general public of his achievements but also a reminder to his political rivals of the stature of the man they were messing with. Sometimes events dictated the tone of cards. The 1917 Christmas booklet with its talk of perseverance and war related photos is a case in point.The 'Kiwi Father Christmas' was advertising for the Golden Kiwi Lottery, and the Godwit and State Fire Insurance are reminders of services provided. |
