The columns, or pilasters which took their place, beingreduced to the humble function of ornaments added to thewall of a building, it became very usual to combine themwith arched openings, and to put an arch in the interspacebetween two columns, or, in other words, to add a columnto the pier between two arches (Fig. 146), These archedopenings being often wide, a good deal of disproportionbetween the lieight of the columns and their distanceapart was liable to occur; and, partly to correct this, thecolumn was often mounted upon a pedestal, to which thename of stylobate has been given.
