In this manner, in representing at once the utilitarianfunction of the feature considered, its history, and the in-tention of the architect who designed it, photography cando more than the pencil or the brush—to the generality ofmankind the photographic representation properly and feel-ingly made, tells more than the diagram, to which it is amost valuable supplement from the archaeologists point ofview. Every one can understand a photograph, but it needslong training to comprehend a diagram drawing, and in themind transform plan and elevation into mass and form.And it is not merely a matter of mechanical understanding.
