The kidney shaped patio garden designed byNed S. Rucker, Landscape Architect, to enhancethe baren hillside outlook from the private officeof Mr. Claude C. Gillam, owner of the Hotel Clare-mont, Berkeley, California, is beautifully carriedout in an architectural manner with colors ofsoft grey on the retaining wall and of the basaltwall blocks used for paving and as coping onthe walls of buff Sonoma stone supporting theraised beds and pool. The buff is repeated in twolines of quarry tile used as a border and pat-tern throughout the paving. The retaining wallis coped with a fine red brick which repeats thebrick of the fireplace in the office. Looking out through the wide French doors ofthe owners office the slightly raised pool is thecenter of interest. On both ends of the pool areraised beds with green shrubbery and brilliantflowers breaking the grey of the wall. The garden has been excavated back into thehill.
