Sal! Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge as it will appear from the Oakland Hills, with the business district of Oakland in the foreground. The drawing;of the bridge was done in a light gray paint more visible than battleship gray, but even with this greater visibility the bridge melts into thebackground and much of its beauty of line is lost. Chief Engineer C. H. Purcell points out that proponents of gray paint fail to realize that, al-though the bridge has huge proportions, yet it is seen from such vast dist :nces that lis towers and cables are like gossamer threads—only to beseen if painted black or some equally visible color.

CAT WALKS. EACH TEN FEET WIDE. WITH WIRE MESH FLOOR FORWORKMEN TO TRAVEL OVER WHILE HUGE CABLES ARE BEING STRUNG THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER ^ 52 ^^ JUNE, NINETEEN THIRTV-FIVE stringing of four ropes between the cen-■ ter anchorage and Tower W-3. With theplacing of the last four ropes betweenTowers W-2 and W-3, and between theSan Francisco anchorage and Pier W-1,building of the crosswalks was begun. The task of putting the wire mesh simul-taneously on each side of the tower fromTower W-3 to the center anchorage, andfrom Tower W-3 to the center of the 2310-foot span is now well advanced. These sec-tions are erected to platforms near the topof the tower, connected to the cable, andthen slid along the cable to the final posi-tion. Upon completion of this operation,these platforms will be transferred to TowerW-2 and the same operation repeated. After the wire mesh is all in place, it willbe tightened to reduce the spring in thewire as much as possible. The storm cableswill then be placed
