SWANSON T„ .HE bridging of SanFrancisco Bay, so loug a topic of conver-sation, is now so far advanced in actualconstruction that an inspection of the workin progress on location requires a full day. Over a five-mile front, or most of thelength of this 8^4 mile bridge, work on this$75,000,000 project is progressing withrapidity which amazes both laymen andengineers. It was July 9th of this year that Gover-nor James Rolph, Jr., and former PresidentHerbert C. Hoover lifted the first spadesof earth on Yerba Buena Island that offi-cially started construction for the SanFrancisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, whilePresident Roosevelt touched off a blast bytelegraph which broke ground on the island,midway between the bay cities. In the few months since this start of con-struction such progress has been made thatnow 1800 men are employed on locationand 900 men in the eastern ste
