Under the west approach there is a trucktunnel 560 feet in length extending fromSanta Fe Avenue to the west river abut-ment where it gives access to the riverchannel. The technical and structural aspects ofthis viaduct have been fully covered in art-icles appearing in the technical journalsfrom time to time. Merrill Butler treatedthis phase of the problem in an article pub-lished in ^a Western Engineering paper,July 10. 1*932. The lighting of the struc-ture was described in an article appearingin the Western City. July. 1933. Inquiry is often made as to the style ofarchitecture employed and to this questionI can only say that it does not follow anyparticular historical precedent, the design ismodern in conception and construction. In-spiration for some of the details was de-rived of course from some of the earlierbuilding styles of architecture.

ThePresidents idea was that this nation cantrust its industries to cooperate to abolishabuses, and it can trust our people to actwith them. Under the Recovery Act, Americantrade and industry are invited to combinewith Government to work out their ownsalvation. They are asked to take theirworkers into this partnership and the wholepeople are shown a way to support thiscommon effort. If ever
