technologist, just issued by the United States Bureau ofMines. Langley is about nine miles north of Augusta, Georgia. Theclays mined in this district are sedimentary kaolins with few impurities.The prevailing color is white; at times the color is smoky grey or pink,and occasionally strong pink to lavender. The lighter colors usuallybecome white on exposure to the air and on diying. The lower partsof the beds are usually the whitest. These kaolins are fine grained intexture and have good plasticity; their tensile strength is from <S to 86pounds. They generally slake readily. Their specific gravity is from2.50 to 2.25. The clays in the district are well adapted for use in paperstock, for which they are mainly used, and in pottery and china ware,without washing. In the district as a whole considerable reserves ofclay are yet untouched, hence the industry can be considered fairlystable. Serial 2382 may he obtained from tlie Bureau of Mines, Wash-ington, D. C.
