t longwhich was of sufficient stiffness to behandled and driven, and which would yetallow of easy transport to a floating pile-driver. The problem was solved by con-structing the piles as circular tubes be-tween 3 feet and 4 feet diameter, rein-forced with steel and built in a speciallyconstructed dry dock, from which theycould be floated out to the pile-driver.After driving they were filled with con-crete. The pile-driver, which, of course, hadto be specially designed for the purpose,is mounted on four floating caissonsbuilt of reinforced concrete. The equip-ment is provided with pumping machin-ery for trimming during the handling andpitching of the piles. This trimming ar-rangement was also utilized to tilt thepile frame in order to drive the piles to acertain inclination, as required by the de- signers. In addition to the trimmingpumps, force pumps were provided foractual driving purposes, two water jetsbeing carried along the whole length ofthe piles diametrically opposite one an-

Hydraulic hose, specially armoredto support the weight due to the consid-erable length of hose filled with water, was obtained. On account of the height of the pile-driver special precautions had to be takenagainst wind pressure, and a very broadbase is provided so as to minimize theeffects of wind tilting. The leaders areof the sliding type and admit of beinglowered below water to a considerabledepth, while guide rollers are fitted so asto keep the circular piles in place duringthe driving. The weight of the hammerwas about 10 tons. The whole of the pile frame was de-signed and built by Messrs. Christianiand Nielson, 25 Victoria street, Westmin-ster, London. England, in connectionwith the design and execution of the rein-forced concrete work of the bridge aboveand for which they were responsible.
