This balancesa similar element on the building and toward the opposite end; but the condi-tions of its appearance in each case are so dissimilar that the correspondence isonly theoretical; while its presence on the free end gives an unpleasant effectof a thing incomplete, awaiting subsequent additions. The swimming pooland solarium at Hotel Del Monte is a composition of fine quality. It is commonly assumed that the countenance of the critic is one whichhabitually registers displeasure, and that his first movement, even prior to theopening of his typewriter, is the careful adjustment of a chip to his shoulder.Let me protest against this popular delusion. The critic is really looking outfor a good time as well as anybody else ; only he is seldom given the opportunityfor so pleasant a time as he enjoyed in examining tliese ilUistraiioiis.
