be of individual design in accor-dance with the particular location and type of house required. These are30 in number, all detached, of bungalow type. They are grouped around ahilltop at the east end of the town. The center is leveled and developedinto a playground with easy access from the town. They all are locatedto offer an unobstructed view into valleys below. THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER 63 Revised House Designs We present the original designs submitted for your town, together with are-design of the houses which contemplates the use of the basements on thedownhill portion of the houses which have been re-arranged into two room andbath apartments. This re-arrangement has been thought necessary by your operating depart-ment in order to bring the capital outlay to a point where your income fromrentals would care for both capital outlay and operating expenses. The revised designs have been submitted to your operating department andhave been approved by them as to cost and facilities.
Text Appearing After Image:
HOUSES IN THE AMERICAN SECTION. MINING TOWN NEAR JEROME, ARIZONAHerding & Boyd, Architects We regret the necessity of changing these houses from a one family dwellinginto an apartment house, as this arrangement will not provide your employeeswith the best type of housing suitable for their requirements. We firmlybelievethat it would be to your advantage to adhere to the original type of housedesign, and to meet general costs such as policing, refuse collection, streetmaintenance, and other matters indirectly related to housing as an item ofgeneral overhead expense,, rather than to attempt to collect it through increasedrentals or by cutting down the facilities that are offered to your employees. From the standpoint of money -involved, this is a comparatively small outlay. 64 THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER
