English: The original canvas is oval and has been made up to a rectangle. Archibald Hope (1664-1743), of the Hopes of Hopetoun, was a Scottish merchant who was born and lived in Rotterdam. His sons set up the Hope Bank in Amsterdam. The art collector and theorist Thomas Hope of Deepdene was his grandson.
