Description

Archbishop of York visiting Church of St Ricarius, Aberford, Lincolnshire, England. The quality of the photo and the dress of the men suggests a date before 1939.

The occasion is very possibly Saturday 5 June 1937, when the Archbishop of York (William Temple) officiated at the funeral and burial at Aberford, of Colonel FRTT Gascoigne of Lotherton Hall, Leeds. The clergy present at Aberford with the Archbishop were Canon GAV Flower vicar of Aberford, Rev. H. Lovell Clarke rector of Barwick, Rev. T. Bottomley vicar of Saxton, and Rev. IER Wilford rector of Garforth. There had been a previous service in the private chapel of Lotherton Hall where the family attended. The coffin was then taken to Aberford on an estate wagon, and it was met by a "large gathering". This gathering included Colonel E. York, Edward Laine and Brigadier-General RE Sugden. These three and the above clergy may be visible in the image. Source for history: Yorkshire Evening Post, Saturday 05 June 1937 p9: "Col. Gascoigne. Archbishop officiates at Aberford burial"

If the above is correct, then the clergyman in the Tudor cap is probably William Temple, Archbishop of York. See this photo of William Temple.
