in the little tablets of theResurrection, which recalls the Apostolic declaration,that If we are planted together in the likeness of Hisdeath, we shall be also in the likeness of His resur-rection. Perhaps a further suggestion might have occurred to the mind of the arranger of the design, somewhat akinto the old Saxon feeling which dedicated the circle ofthe months to religious reminiscences, and thus throughall the year called to mind the Giver of every good andperfect gift, so elegantly expressed by the poet Thom-son, in his Hymn to the Seasons:— These as they change, Almighty Father, theseAre but Thy varied works. The rolling yearIs full of Thee. Forth in the pleasing springThy beauty walks, Thy tenderness and love. Then comes Thy glory in the summer monthsWith light and heat refulgent. Thy beauty shines in autumn unconfined,And spreads a common feast for all that lives.In winter awful Thou ! Hiding sublime, Thou biddst the world adore,And humblest nature with Thy northern blast.
