Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Diagram of a Poulsen arc chamber, from a Poulsen arc radio transmitter, invented in 1902 and used in high power radio stations until the mid-1920s. In a Poulsen arc transmitter, an electric arc stabilized by a magnetic field in a hydrogen (H2) atmosphere, excites continuous wave (CW) oscillations in a tuned circuit connected across the arc's electrodes. In the diagram the terminals of the arc electrodes are at R and L, and at top and bottom are connections for tubes supplying the hydrogen gas. In operation the entire chamber is installed between the poles of a powerful electromagnet, with the iron pole pieces penetrating the front and back sides of the chamber.
