About this mere thread of a plot Howells has made a very entertaining little sketch,which was most pleasantly presented by the Garrick Club cast, under the direction ofMiss Edna Johnson, assisted by Opal West. The single male role; that of the superiorfiance was taken by Robert Bierhaus; while Lola Dunn made a most charming Mrs.Summers. Edythe Studebaker took the part of the maid; and the quartette of visitingladies was formed by Helen Polk, Marjorie Hull, Thelma Newkirk, and Henrietta Rosen-thal. The climaxes of this little sketch are marked by screams, and the criteria by whichit should be judged is the ability and enthusiasm with which the interpreters of the sixfemale roles indulge in that exercise. The play depictedthe many amusing complications that disrupted the hitherto peaceful household of oneEbeneezer Goodly after Jones, a traveling salesman, enters it to escape the police, and ismistaken by the family for the professors brother, the Bishop of Ballerat. Robert Loomis directed the producetion, taking at the same time the role ofJones. Paul Gaskins played the role of thedistressed professor, while the part of hiswife was acted by Gertrude Miedema.Ruthven Byrum was the Bishop, MadalineGullion his spinster sweetheart, and GeorgiaBrown the professors ward, with whomJones falls in love.
