| Description | I'd seen a short video clip of the feeding frenzy of Arapaima fish in the Singapore zoo, with a warning notice nearby to boot, based on which I had concluded that the Araipama are vicious fish like the Piranha. Much later, I realized that nothing could be further from the truth. The Araipama, native to South America, is one of the largest fresh water fishes in the world, often reaching lengths of upto 6ft or even more. It's an air breather, and feeds on crustaceans, other fish, and sometimes even land animals that walk near the shore. HK, Jan/Feb. 2012 |
