Summary

Description

Here, it is a male individual, photographed in the harbor of Brest on a bottom of maërl (accumulation of coralline algae common in Brittany).

Its shell, strongly domed and rounded, can measure up to 25 cm long and 18 cm wide. Its legs, with significant hairiness, are long and thin. Note that, unlike other crustaceans, the spider crab has a terminal moult, which has the consequence of stopping its growth abruptly.

Its fishing is subject to regulation: see Berne Convention (relating to the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats in Europe): Annex III – Protected species .
