English: Arabesque, Temple of Hadrian
One of the finest buildings in Ephesus is the charming Temple of Hadrian, a small structure with an arched facade. Ephesus is justly famed as one of the finest ancient Roman sites anywhere. The ruins of the city are extensive with many impressive monuments to amaze the visitor (that have often been partially reassembled to give an indication of their former glory and context). Unfortunately the fame and popularity of the site means that, unlike most of the classical sites we visited elsewhere, it is constantly crowded with tourists. However the city has always attracted visitors, and among those who spent time here centuries ago were St Paul and St John (and possibly Mary herself if one believes in the authenticity of her nearby residence). |
