Y éstas son individuos solitarios que viven sólo durante unos meses al año y sólo pueden reproducirse una vez en su vida, al finalizar el verano. Por lo tanto no existe una competencia por elegir al mejor macho, o ni siquiera por elegir un macho. Con el primero que llegue es suficiente. Estudios recientes (5J. Moya-Laran˜ o et al. 2009), muestran que existe una presión selectiva a favor de aquellos machos que pueden trepar más rápidamente por la tela. Y resulta que existe un tamaño óptimo para ser el más rápido trepando telas de araña colgantes, como las de las especies de Argiope. Y ese tamaño, 7.4 mm de longitud, es justo el tamaño que alcanzan los machos de este género, (y el de otros). Así pues, existe una presión evolutiva por ser el más rápido, por ser el primero en llegar hasta la hembra (es curioso, pues sólo en especies que tejen telas de araña colgantes orbiculares, se da este tipo de dimorfismo entre macho y hembra). Eso hace que los machos más pequeños sean los que dejen una mayor descendencia. Por lo tanto, generación tras generación, los machos pequeños han ido dejando una mayor descendencia que los machos de mayor tamaño. Pero ojo, existe un tamaño óptimo. Si eres demasiado pequeño, ya no eres tan rápido, y entonces ya no dejas tanta descendencia como tus competidores. |
