1145 noch zu Lebzeiten seines Vaters führte Heinrich eine Fehde mit dem Grafen Volkwin von Schwalenberg- Waldeck um das Kloster Obermarsberg. Er wollte die strategisch wichtige Stelle um die alte Eresburg gewinnen, welches aber nicht gelang.Wie schon sein Vater war er oft an der Seite der Kaiser anzutreffen. Als im April 1152 Friedrich Barbarossa in Soest war, befand sich Heinrich von Arnsberg in seiner Umgebung , im selben Jahr war sein Bruder Friedrich im kaiserlichen Hoflager in Köln Daneben war der Graf auch in der Umgebung von Erzbischof Rainald von Dassel und seines Verwandten Heinrich des Löwen anzutreffen. Heinrichs Bruder auch mit dem Namen Heinrich stellte Erbansprüche,welche er nicht anerkennen wollte. Er sperrte seinen Bruder in den Kerker wo dieser 1165 starb.Duch diesen Brudermord viel Heinrich in Ungnade. Einige Bischöfe Westfalens stürmten 1166 die Burg und zerstörten sie.Der Graf konnte entkommen und schaffte es seine Herrschaft durch Selbstdemütigung vor dem Kölner Erzbischof zu behaupten. Graf Heinrich musste dem Erzbischof erhebliche Zugeständnisse machen Eine für die Region positive Folge des Mordes war um 1170 das zur Sühne gegründete Prämonstratenserstift Wedinghausen .
