The cage and tank are secured to the opposite ends of a cable that passes over pulleys at the top of the shaft. The fish compartment is provided with two doors, one at each end. When it is at the bottom of the shaft beneath the water one of these gates is raised to per- mit fish to enter. On the other hand, an auxiliary door on the shaft lets down and prevents fish from swimming around to the back side of the guides or into the space normally occupied by the carried, when the latter ascends.
