Seven genera containing twenty-nine species are known from the United States and Canada. The larvae are generally found among submerged plants in lakes and marshes, but a few species are found in slowly flowing streams. The larval cases (fig. 10:2a) are generally long and built in a spiral. The family is very poorly represented in California, there being only three genera and three species recorded to date. Tenth tergite consisting of 2 long, black sclerotized rods Eubasilissa Martynov 1930 — Tenth tergite not rodlike 4 4. Hind wings mostly black except for yellow reticulations near apex Oligostomis Kolenati 1848 — Hind wings with only black spots on a gray or clear ground color 5 5. Ninth tergite forming a transverse, somewhat hood- shaped area, and bearing a brush or pair of brushes of long setae Agrypnia Curtis 1835 — Ninth tergite continuous with outline of 10th tergite, usually not bearing long setae 6 6. Middle tibiae thorny, the black spines very prominent; wings shiny with black markings Banksiola Martynov 1924 — Middle tibiae not thorny, the black spines not prom- inent, wings dull, tawny brown Fabria Milne 1934 1. Frons with a median black line 2 — Frons without a median black line 3 2.
