Summary

Description

The King Range NLCS unit boasts second and old growth, Douglas-fir-tan oak forest, coastal prairies, chaparral, scrub, and dunes. Of these, the coastal dunes near the mouth of the Mattole River, present a spectacular seasonal display of native wildflowers April through May. Like a Monet watercolor, shades or purple, blue, fuschia, pink, grey, sage green, and soft golds blanket these semi-stabilized, maritime sands. Beach pea flaunts its colors attracting a variety and abundance of native bees seeking pollen and nectar to take back to their queen.
