Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Approaching Nantanog Farm. Nantanog was the cradle of the Williams-Wynne dynasty - at one time Wales' largest landowners. In the 19thC, it was said, one could walk from Rhyl to Aberystwyth without once leaving Williams-Wynne land. By that time, the family had, and still has, its main home at Wynnstay, near Ruabon. The founder of the dynasty was Hugh Williams D.D. (1596-1670), minor squire and vicar of Llantrisant and Llanrhuddlad. His eldest son, the ambitious lawyer, William Williams (1634-1799) married into money. When he sought of Watcyn Kyffin of Llansilin, Denbighshire, the hand of his daughter, Margaret, Kyffin enquired of Williams how he thought he could possibly provide her with the standard of comfort she was accustomed to. Williams is said to have answered "I have, sir, a tongue and a gown". These twin assets seem to have served him well. He became a slippery lawyer, MP and Speaker of the House of Commons, Solicitor-General, and a major landowner.
