Le Torana nord (portique) du grand stupa de Sanchi Le Torana nord est porté par des éléphants, la Roue de la Loi au sommet a été brisée. Sur l'architrave supérieure, on a une représentation du Chhaddanta Jataka ( dans une de ses vies antérieures, le Bouddha a été réincarné en éléphant à 6 défenses) Sur l'architrave du centre on voit la tentation du Bouddha (à gauche sous la forme d'un Arbre) par les armées de Mara. Le Vessantara Jataka figure sur l'architrave du bas Des Yakshinis de différentes tailles soutiennent les architraves. Le grand stūpa de Sanchi a un diamètre de 36 m environ, il est entouré d'une balustrade et de 4 portiques sculptés orientés vers les points cardinaux. Les Torana(s) datent du Ier siècle avant J.-C., ils sont ornés de scènes de la vie du Bouddha, de ses vies antérieures (Jatakas), d'épisodes guerriers ou de cérémonies auxquelles Ashoka participe. A cette époque le Bouddha n'était pas représenté sous une forme humaine, mais comme l'Arbre (de la Connaissance), la Roue (de la Loi), ou encore comme un Stupa. Sur une colline à environ 40 km de Bhopal dans l'Etat du Madhya Pradesh au centre de l'Inde, le site de Sânchî regroupe des monuments bouddhiques (piliers monolithes, palais, stupas et monastères) dont la plupart remontent au IIème siècle avant J.-C. C'est Ashoka, l'empereur Maurya, converti au Bouddhisme, et dont l'épouse était née dans la ville voisine, qui a fait édifier ce site religieux, resté actif jusqu'au XIIème siècle. Le sanctuaire a ensuite été oublié avec la disparition du Bouddhisme en Inde puis a été redécouvert au début du XIXème siècle (1818) par un officier britannique.
