Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Apprentice House, Quarry Bank Mill The Apprentice House and garden at Quarry Bank Mill was built by Samuel Greg in 1790 to home child apprentices who came from orphanages and workhouses as far away as Liverpool and London. The 90 children (60 girls and 30 boys) made up 50% of the total workforce and received their board and lodging, and two pence a week. The children lived in the Apprentice House where they would do schoolwork and gardening after coming back from working long days at the mill. However, most children were happy to work in the mill because life in the workhouse would be much worse and over 1000 apprentices were employed at Quarry Bank, the last in 1847.
