In the Horace Greeley (PlateLIII), one of the masterpieces of modernportraiture in pure form, we have a studyfrom nature whose accuracy and whosedignity at once can be more easily verified,for there are many still living who can re-call the odd, unimposing figure and face ofthe celebrated founder of the New YorkTribune—the most unlucky of all candi-dates for the presidency. The awkwardness,the strange face and figure, had to be notedby the artist, and the disposition and poseof the man in his armchair, with the sheetof manuscript, and the bowed though stillalert attitude as of a person keenly awaketo intellectual questions, is all perfectly inharmony with the conditions of the prob-lem.
