NEW YORK. 119 Brooklyn—Hudson River. The Brooklyn Athenaeum, corner ofAtlantic and Clinton streets, in SouthBrooklyn, is a fine edifice of brick, withbrown stone facings. It has an admira-ble library, reading-rooms, and a spa-cious lecture or concert hall, which willscat 2,000 persons. The Lyceum, containing the CityLibrary and a good lecture-room, is atthe corner of Washington and Concordstreets. Brooklyn, which now comprehendsalso the city of Williamsburg, is in pop-ulation (which is no less than 200,000)the second city in the State of NewYork, though its close vicinage to themetropolis absorbs it, and destroys itsdistinctive importance. A great por-tion of its residents do business in NewYork, and live in Brooklyn only for theconvenience and comfort of purer air, more quiet, and less cost. The city is in many parts elegantlybuilt, and the bold position on theHeights, directly looking down upon theriver and the bay, is a charming sitefor a summer abode. Some of the ave-nues of Broo
