the most famous scenes in the Union. In the south-eastern part of the State the surface is flat and sandy, though the sea coast is,*in many places, very bold, and charmingly varied with fine pictures of rockybluff and cliff. It abounds in admirable summer houses, where the lovers of sea-breezes and bathing may find every means and appliance for comfort andpleasure. In the eastern and central regions, the physical aspect of the country, thoughagreeably diversified, is eclipsed in attraction by the lavish art-adornments ofcrowding city and village, and happy homesteads, nowhere so abundant and sointeresting as here. The Green Mountains traverse the western portion of Massachusetts in tworidges, lying some 25 miles apart, with picturesque valley lands between. Hereare the favorite summer resorts of Berkshire, and other parts of the Housatonicregion. Saddle Mountain, 3,505 feet, is a spur of the most western of the tworidges we have mentioned, known as the Taconic or the Taugkannic hills.
