Oro Del Norte Black Sands Plant, showing sand skip and track for dumping waste. twenty-five men when in operation. Three shifts are worked and theelectric power is developed by a 200 horsepower distillate engine.A change from the wood burning system to distillate was being madeat the time I was at the plant. A larger suction pipe line was alsobeing installed. The management claims that the new equipment willhandle 800 yards of sand every twenty-four hours. The suction pipe is 5 inches in diameter and works on the ejectorprinciple. The sand is delivered from the pipe line to a revolvingscreen which screens out all driftwood and large wash which is trammedto the waters edge and dumped. The sand from the screen falls to abin from which it is drawn off to a 2-cubic yard skip and hauled up theincline to the sand bins at the top of the treatment plant. Water is 378 MINES AND MINERAL RESOURCES.

The sand and wateris allowed to flow over the metal riffle area at the same time an alternat-ing current of electricity is passed through the metal plates. Theseplates have a grade of 2 inches to the foot and the magnetic iron whichcomposes 30 to 50 per cent of the black sands is charged with electricityand repelled, leaving the gold and platinum in a concentrated condi-tion.
