be reduced to a minimum, and a hundred barrels of oilwere used upon the stretches of road previously prepared for the receptionof the oil, under the direction of Mr. Ellery, as above stated. The resultof the experiment has been a most bitter disappointment. The roadwaywould not pack; the surface being composed of decomposed granite, theoil sifted through it, pretty nearly much in the same manner as waterdoes. The oil sinking into this granitic sand simply left a covering ofloose sand saturated with oil, which bespattered the clothes of travelersand made the conditions even worse than they were before. The reportof Mr. Ellery, made after an examination of the roads subsequent to the use of oil, is annexed hereto. Apparently, the only solution of the difficulty is to abandon the ideaof using the present surface of the road and build up a road of someother substance, packing the same by the use of either oil or water.The cost of such work will be extremely large in the first instance, but
