East and West Entrances to Quadrangle—Stanford University. sandstone, rough hewn, and roofed with red tile. The central featureof the outer quadrangle is the Memorial Arch, 100 feet in height 90feet wide, and 34 feet deep, surrounded at the top by a sculptured frieze12 feet in height, designed by Augustus St. Gaudens, and representingthe Progress of Civilization in America. The fourteen buildings of theouter quadrangle are also connected by open arcades facing outward.Outside of the quadrangles are various detached buildings connectedwith the Engineering departments, the chemistry building, the Leland 32 REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, Stanford Junior museum, containing the extensive art and archaeologicalcollections of the University, the two dormitories, Encina Hall, RobleHall, and the gymnasiums.

(iiAi.RANdi.E IN THK Rain—Stanford University. The crowning architectural feature is the Memorial Church, whichstands in the center of the inner quadrangle group. It is of modifiedMoorish-Romanesque architecture, and in the form of a cross withrounded ends. It is 190 feet in length through vestibule, nave, and REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION. 33 apse, and 156 feet in width through transept. The four gables of navetransept wings, and apse are united by a twelve-sided l)elfry towerwhose spire rises to a height of 190 feet. The tooled stone of the insidewalls IS reheved by elaborate carved designs and fifteenth centurymosaics of great beauty. Nineteen large stained glass windows of ulvetransept, and apse, in a series of beautiful designs, illustrate the life ofChrist. The seating capacity is about seventeen hundred.
