Title
Apothecary Weight from Binbrook or Swinhope
Description
English: Copper alloy

Weight. Cast rectangular, with stamped design on both sides. One side bears a hand, with (probably) D to left and I to right. The other side bears an orb within a six arched tressure, with two pellets to the right. The finder suggests this may be a coin weight, though some authorities consider definition as apothecary weights more apt. The weight here may be equivalent to that of two silver pennies, or two scruples. Copper alloy weights had largely replaced those of lead by the end of the 17th century. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700.

Length: 14.7mm, Width: 14.1mm, Thickness: 1.9mm, Weight: 2.80gms.
