Christ Baptised in Jordan: This is a representation in mosaic of the Baptism of Christ in Jordan, preserved in the Church, in Cosmedin, at Ravenna, which was erected A. D. 401. In the centre is Christ our Saviour in the river Jordan. On a rock stands John the Baptist, in his left hand is a bent rod, and his right hand holds a patera, shell; from which he POURS WATER on the head of the Redeemer; over whom descends the dove, the symbol of the Holy Ghost, with expanded wings, and emitting rays of glory and grace.

This representation is the centre-piece of the dome of theBaptistery at Ravenna; which building was erected anddecorated in 454. John the Baptist is drawn as standing on the bank of theriver, holding in his left hand an oblong cross, and in hisright hand a shell from which he pours water on the head ofChrist who is standing in the water up to his waist. Overthe Lord is a crown of glory, and the figure of a dove, sym-bolizing the Holy Spirit. The rite of Baptism appears to beperformed both by Immersion and Affusion at the same time.The name jordann is written over the head of the mytholo-gical figure, which according to the custom of the ancientsrepresented that river. 189 V. CHRIST BAPTIZED IN JORDAN.
