De jaloerse westenwind Zephyrus zorgt er echter voor dat de discus het hoofd van Hyacinthus raakt. Vooraan verzorgt Apollo zijn wond. Hyacinthus overleeft het voorval niet en uit zijn bloed zou een hyacint bloeien. In de negentiende eeuw werd deze band weer uit elkaar gehaald.
