English: Apollo Sungate .... 530 B.C ...Still Standing........
The famous Portara, trademark of Naxos, is located right next to the port, on a rocky islet called Palatia and is bound to the mainland by a paved path. The name was given by the locals. It is the monumental doorway of the temple of Apollo that collapsed before being completed (probably during construction) and was never built again. The temple was an ambitious attempt started by the tyrant of Naxos Lygdamis in 530-524 B.C. You can see the traces of its ruins, the broken scattered marbles and the foundations of the perimeter colonnade. Around the 6th century, a Christian basilica was built here.

Portara sólo puede ser descrita como un paraíso para los amantes y un sueño de poetas, con sus vistas panorámicas impresionantes que incluyen un sinfín de altas montañas dotadas por la naturaleza, así como hermosas iglesias, monasterios, palacios venecianos y castillos creados por talentosas manos humanas . Es esencialmente una grandiosa puerta de mármol que conduce a ninguna parte. Se encuentra cerca del puerto de Naxos en el islote de Palatia, que una vez fue una colina. Una franja de tierra conectaba el norte del puerto de Naxos con Palatia en los tiempos antiguos. Hoy en día, la franja de tierra ha sido reemplazada por una calzada. El mito dice que el islote de Palatia era exactamente donde Ariadna, la princesa minoica, fue abandonada por su amante, Teseo, después de matar al Minotauro en la isla de Creta. Durante la Edad Media se construyó una iglesia detrás de la Portara. Pero más tarde, bajo dominio veneciano, fue desmantelada para usar el mármol para la construcción del “Kastro“. Afortunadamente, la Portara era demasiado pesada para ser completamente desmantelada. Hay que reconocer que, a pesar de que es bastante empinada la subida a la cima de la colina, sólo la experiencia de ver la puesta de sol a través de la Portara merece la pena. Algunos dicen que si se pide un deseo de pie en la puerta, se puede sentir como la energía de Apolo comienza a hacer realidad el sueño. |
