Summary

[edit]
Description

The Apollo Sauroktonos, a marble carving created by an unknown Roman sculptor between 100 to 200 AD. It is a copy of an original bronze sculpture of the same name by the ancient Greek sculptor Praxiteles.

The statue depicts a nude adolescent male (representing the god Apollo) about to catch a lizard climbing up a tree. In the myth, Apollo kills the lizard (or snake) Python after Python pursued his mother, Leto, during childbirth. The site of the slaying, historically, is co-located with the Oracle of Delphi.

The Cleveland Museum of Art owns a bronze sculpture of the same, which it attributes to Praxiteles. This marble copy from The Louvre, Paris, France, was loaned to the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of its exhibition of the bronze in 2013.
