Title
Antwerp coin weight reverse
Description
English: Copper alloy,16th century, continental coin weight. The coin weight is square in plan and measures 14.52mm by 13.82mm. It is 2.38mm thick and weighs 2.91g. The front face of the coin weight has a design of a right hand, the symbol of Antwerp, surrounded by a circle of stars. To either side of the hand are the initials P and G. This is the issuers initials, but unfortunately we do not know who the issuer was. There was a Pieter van de Gheere of unknown origin, issuing coin weights in the Netherlands, but we cannot state for certain that this is his weight, especially as there is no use of 'V' for van. The reverse of the weight shows a standing, nimbate figure holding a halberd. This is probably St Matthias, the 'thirteenth' apostle recruited to take the place of Judas Iscariot. he was martyred by being stoned and beheaded by a halberd. The use of issuers initials on weights came into being in the mid 16th century.
